India’s 1st Geological Museum

Why in News?

India's first world-class geological museum will be built at Bhedaghat-Lamhetaghat in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. The museum will showcase the rich geological history of the Narmada Valley, from fossils to rock formations that are millions of years old.

About the Project:

The project will have a geological museum and interpretation center with 6 galleries and 130+ exhibits. It will explain how the Earth was formed and how the Narmada Valley evolved over millions of years, using interactive and easy-to-understand displays.

Major Attractions:

Inside: 3D models, touch tables, digital panels, and an immersive theater.
Outside:Titanosaur Square, Dinosaur Park, Fossil Garden, Geological Maze, Rock Garden, Tree-top Walkway, Glass Floor, Nature Trails, and Viewing Decks for the Narmada Valley.
Project Details: Approved by the Central Government under the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme
Cost:Rs 87 crore
Implementing Agency:Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board
Target Completion:February 2028

Significance: The museum will boost geological education, scientific awareness, and ecotourism while putting Jabalpur and the Narmada Valley on the global geo-tourism map.

Swadesh Darshan Scheme

The Swadesh Darshan Scheme was launched by the Ministry of Tourism in 2015 as a 100% centrally funded scheme to develop sustainable and responsible tourism in India.

It aims at the integrated development of theme-based tourist circuits such as Buddhist, Coastal, Desert, Eco, Heritage, and Northeast, where the center provides financial assistance to state governments, UTs, and central agencies for tourism infrastructure, and the operation & maintenance is handled by the respective states/UTs.

Swadesh Darshan 2.0

Its upgraded version, Swadesh Darshan 2.0, marks a shift from circuit-based to destination-centric development, aligning with the Vocal for Local and Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision and focusing on increasing private sector investment for long-term growth.

Under it, the Challenge-Based Destination Development (CBDD) is a competitive sub-scheme that develops destinations with a focus on sustainability, digitalization, skill development, and support for MSMEs.

Conclusion:

The proposed Geological Museum in Narmada Valley is a major step to showcase India's rich geo-heritage under the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme. With its 6 galleries, immersive technology, and attractions like Dinosaur Park and Titanosaur Square, it will not only explain complex geological concepts like Earth's mantle and the evolution of the Narmada Valley in a simple way but also promote scientific learning, ecotourism, and local employment. Once completed by 2028, it will position Madhya Pradesh as a global geo-tourism destination.
