DRDO’s 16,000-Ft Parachute Jump
Why in News?
Recently, the Defence Research and Development Organisation has successfully conducted the maiden live jump of the Advanced High-Altitude Parachute (AHAP) at Nyoma (Mudh Drop Zone) in Ladakh.
The successful trial demonstrates the capability of India’s indigenously developed parachute system to support the tactical deployment of paratroopers in extremely high-altitude areas.
AHAP Successfully Tested at 16,000 Feet
The live jump was carried out from an altitude of 16,000 feet above mean sea level (AMSL). The parachute was deployed at 15,500 feet, while the landing took place at Nyoma (Mudh DZ), located at around 13,700 feet.
The trial successfully demonstrated the efficacy and tactical employability of the AHAP in extremely high-altitude terrain, where parachute operations are more challenging because of thin air, high opening shock, and increased descent risks.
What is the Advanced High-Altitude Parachute?
AHAP is an indigenous static-line parachute system designed for the mass dropping of paratroopers.
It has been designed and developed by the Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE), Agra, a DRDO laboratory.
Key Features of AHAP
- Type: Static-line parachute system
- Purpose: Mass deployment of paratroopers
- Operational altitude: Up to 18,000 feet
- Deployment: Supports multiple deployment modes
- Descent: Designed to provide a safer rate of descent
- Application: Particularly suited for high-altitude tactical operations
Why High-Altitude Parachute Operations Are Challenging?
Parachute jumps at very high altitudes are technically difficult and carry significant risks.
At such heights, low air density can affect parachute performance. Static-line jumps also involve a high opening shock and rapid descent, making the operation more complex.
The AHAP has been developed to address these challenges and provide a safer and more effective parachute system for operations in high-altitude terrains.
Made in India: Indigenous Development
The AHAP represents another step towards strengthening Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence technology.
The system has been developed by ADRDE, Agra, and manufactured by the Ordnance Parachute Factory (OPF), Kanpur.
It was subsequently inspected by the Directorate General of Aeronautical Quality Assurance (DGAQA) and certified by the Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (CEMILAC), RCMA Kanpur.
Significance for Indian Defense
The successful live jump is important because it validates the use of an indigenous high-altitude parachute system under demanding operational conditions.
It can strengthen the capability of the Indian Defence Forces to conduct airborne and tactical operations in mountainous and high-altitude regions.
The trial also highlights the growing role of DRDO, Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), the Armed Forces, and Indian industry in developing critical defense technologies domestically.
A Step Towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Defense Forces, DPSUs, and industry partners for the successful maiden live jump. He described the achievement as another significant step towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
Defense Secretary and Secretary, Department of Defense R&D & Chairman, DRDO Rajesh Kumar Singh also congratulated the teams involved in the design and development of the AHAP system.
About DRDO
DRDO was established in 1958 through the merger of three key bodies—the Technical Development Establishment (TDEs) of the Indian Army, the Directorate of Technical Development and Production (DTDP), and the Defence Science Organisation (DSO). It works under the Ministry of Defence.
DRDO's main responsibility is to indigenously design, develop, and produce advanced weapon systems and defense technologies for the Indian Armed Forces.
Its mandate covers a wide range—from missiles, armaments, electronics, and combat vehicles to futuristic areas like advanced materials, robotics, artificial intelligence, and protection against nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) threats.
It also transfers its technology to Indian industries to strengthen the defense ecosystem and make it globally competitive. Overall, its key objective is to achieve self-reliance by building strong indigenous R&D and manufacturing capabilities for national security.
Conclusion
The successful maiden live jump of the Advanced High-Altitude Parachute at Nyoma marks an important achievement in India’s indigenous defense technology efforts.
With an operational altitude capability of up to 18,000 feet, multiple deployment modes and a safer descent profile, the AHAP is designed to meet the demanding requirements of high-altitude airborne operations.
The trial not only demonstrates technological capability but also strengthens India’s push towards self-reliance in critical defense equipment.

Q1. Mission Shakti (DRDO) of India is related to which one among the following? (CDS-II 2024):
A. Launch of multiple satellites using a single rocket
B. Launch of heavy satellites
C. Use of high-power rockets in the launching of satellites
D. Use of a rocket to destroy an orbiting satellite
Answer:
D
Explanation:
- Mission Shakti was not related to satellite launching but to destroying a satellite in orbit.
- It was a demonstration of kinetic kill technology where a missile directly collides with a satellite to destroy it.
- India conducted this to safeguard its national security, communications, and space assets in case of any adversary threat.
- The operation was carried out by DRDO and ISRO jointly, showing India’s advancement in space warfare technologies.
Q2. Consider the following statements with respect to DRDO:
- It is headquartered in Sri Harikota.
- It is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Science and Technology.
Which of the following codes given below are correct?
[A] 1 only
[B] 2 only
[C] Both 1 and 2
[D] Neither 1 nor 2
Answer:
D
