The Last Letter from the River

For forty years, Raghu knew the river by its moods. He knew when the current would turn quick, when the sandbank would appear, and when the first call of the koel meant the water would begin to warm. His boat was his work, his classroom, and the place where his children had learned to count.

When the old ferry route closed, Raghu decided to write a letter instead of complaining. He wrote about the passengers who depended on the crossing, the schoolchildren who arrived with wet shoes, and the mornings when the river seemed to hold the whole sky.

He never expected an answer. But the letter travelled from one office to another, and then from one village meeting to the next. Months later, a safer crossing was approved. Raghu kept the original letter folded inside his boat. He said it was not really a letter to the river. It was a reminder that places speak through the people who care for them.
