Question

Explain the formation of the Himalayas with the help of theory of plate tectonics.

Model answer

The Himalayas, one of the youngest and highest mountain ranges in the world, are the result of a prolonged tectonic process involving the convergence and collision of the Indian Plate with the Eurasian Plate. According to the Theory of Plate Tectonics, their formation began with the northward movement of the Indian Plate following the breakup of Gondwana, eventually leading to the closure of the Tethys Sea and the folding and upliftment of its sediments. This process of continental collision, which began approximately 50–55 million years ago, continues even today, making the Himalayas a geologically active mountain system.

The formation of the Himalayas can be understood through the following stages:

  • Break-up of Gondwana: Around 180 million years ago, the Indian Plate separated from the Gondwana supercontinent and started drifting northwards.

  • Existence of Tethys Sea: The Tethys Sea lay between the Indian and Eurasian plates. Its seabed accumulated thick layers of sediments over millions of years.

  • Convergence and Subduction: As the Indian Plate moved northwards, the oceanic crust of the Tethys Sea was progressively subducted beneath the Eurasian Plate.

  • Continental Collision: Approximately 50–55 million years ago, the Indian Plate collided with the Eurasian Plate, closing the Tethys Sea.

  • Folding and Upliftment: The intense compressional forces caused the accumulated sediments to fold, fault and uplift, resulting in the formation of the Himalayan mountain ranges.

  • Ongoing Tectonic Activity: The Indian Plate continues to move northwards and underthrust beneath the Eurasian Plate, contributing to continued Himalayan uplift, earthquakes and crustal deformation.

Thus, the Himalayas are geologically young, tectonically active fold mountains formed through plate convergence and continental collision. Their continuing evolution highlights the dynamic nature of the Earth's crust and makes the Himalayan region highly vulnerable to earthquakes and landslides.
