BiotechnologyFarms, Medicine & a Cleaner Environment

Biotechnology puts living cells to work: pest-resistant crops, vitamin-rich rice, insulin made by bacteria, microbes that eat oil spills. This page explains what biotechnology is, how it can make Indian farming sustainable, what transgenic crops mean for India, how it improves health and the environment, and what holds the sector back.

Biotechnology

Biotechnology is the area of biology that uses living processes, organisms or process to manufacture products or technology intended to improve the quality of human life.

It includes disciplines like molecular modelling, genomics, bio-informatics, bio-simulation, clinical information and many more.

It provides breakthrough products and technologies to

  • combat debilitating and rare diseases,
  • reduce our environmental footprint,
  • feed the hungry,
  • use less and cleaner energy, and
  • have safer, cleaner and more efficient industrial manufacturing processes.
