ISRO

The Indian Space Research Organisation is the space agency of the Government of India and has its headquarters in the city of Bengaluru. Its vision is to “harness space technology for national development while pursuing space science research & planetary exploration”.

The Indian space programme was driven by the vision of Vikram Sarabhai, considered the father of the Indian space programme.

From INCOSPAR to ISRO

The Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR) was established by Jawaharlal Nehru under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) in 1962, with the urging of scientist Vikram Sarabhai recognising the need in space research.

INCOSPAR grew and became ISRO in 1969. Currently, ISRO is under the Department of Space.

“If we are to play a meaningful role nationally, and in the community of nations, we must be second to none in the application of advanced technologies to the real problems of man and society, which we find in our country.”
Vikram Sarabhai
