Global Warming & Acid RainA Warming Planet and Rising Seas

Greenhouse gases from human activity are heating the planet, melting ice and raising the sea. This page explains global warming and its effects, what India is doing to adapt and to cut emissions, whether the world really could go under water, and how acid rain forms and what it damages.

Part 1 · What is global warming?

Global Warming and Its Effects

A rise in the average temperature near the Earth's surface, driven mostly by greenhouse gases from human activity, with effects from rising seas to bleached reefs.

Illustration of a warming Earth: melting glaciers, a heatwave-struck city and a flooded coastline under a hazy sky
“Global warming is an average increase in the temperature of the atmosphere near the Earth's surface and in the troposphere, which can contribute to changes in global climate patterns. Global warming can occur from a variety of causes, both natural and human induced. In common usage, “global warming” often refers to the warming that can occur as a result of increased emissions of greenhouse gases from human activities.”
Definition of global warming

The gases

Some potent GHGs are Water vapours, Carbon dioxide, Methane, Nitrous Oxides, Fluorinated gases like HFCs, PFCs, and SF6. Further, aerosols like Black carbon, Brown carbon also contribute in warming temperature.

Record heat

Earth has warmed at an unprecedented rate over the last hundred years and particularly over the last two decades. Since 1992, each year has been one of the warmest years on record. 2016 was the hottest year on record, worldwide.

An upsurge in the amount of extreme weather events, such as wildfires, heat waves, and strong tropical storms, is also attributed to global warming.

Effects of global warming

Seas

Rise in sea level.

Rain

Changes in rainfall patterns.

Extremes

Increased likelihood of extreme events such as heat wave, flooding, hurricanes, etc.

Ice

Melting of the ice caps. Melting of glaciers.

Wildlife

Widespread vanishing of animal populations due to habitat loss.

Disease

Spread of disease (like malaria, etc).

Reefs

Bleaching of coral reefs.

Plankton

Loss of plankton due to warming of seas.

Feedback loop

High temperature results in more energy demands for cooling purpose that in turn leads to more emission of GHGs.

Example: The greenhouse effect works like a car parked in the sun with its windows closed: sunlight gets in easily, but the heat it turns into cannot get out as fast, so the inside keeps warming. Greenhouse gases are the closed windows of the atmosphere.

“The IPCC Special report 2018 said that there is no safe level of global warming and sea levels would continue to rise for centuries even if we cap warming at 1.5°C.”
