Role of caste in Indian politics

Caste and Casteism

Castes in Indian society are social groups where membership is decided by birth. Members of such local groups are endogamous (they marry within the group). They often have related political preferences.

In India, it is significantly observed that:
“People do not cast their vote, they vote their caste.”
Casteism

As in the case of communalism, casteism is rooted in the belief that caste is the sole basis of social community. According to this way of thinking, people belonging to the same caste form a natural social community and have the same interests, which they do not share with anyone from another caste.

Four broad categories

For political and government purposes, castes are broadly divided into:

1Forward Castes2Other Backward Classes (OBC)3Scheduled Castes4Scheduled Tribes
“It is not politics that gets caste-ridden; it is caste that gets politicised.”
