The prominent art forms found in Bihar are painting, dance, music, sculpture and drama.
Mauryan foundations
- •Art forms first developed to an advanced stage during the Mauryan period and are classified into court art and folk art.
- •Court art includes the 80-pillared assembly hall at Kumhrar, cave sites, monolithic pillars, stupas and sculpture; folk art is mainly sculpture and pottery.
- •Large-scale stupa building (84,000 stupas) took place under Ashoka; Northern Black Polished Ware is found at Pataliputra among other sites.
After the Mauryas
- •The development of the arts continued after the decline of the Mauryas; stupas continued to be built on a large scale.
- •Hundreds of caves were cut out of solid rock, mainly for monastic purposes.
- •General building activity followed, more or less, the Mauryan tradition. The influence of Gupta art is also seen in Bihar, and the Pala era was another phase of patronage.
Painting and performing arts
- •Apart from Pala painting, Patna Kalam, Madhubani and Manjusha are important painting styles of Bihar.

Mauryan art and culture /
Stone, imperial patronage and folk practice
Mauryan art combined imperial monuments with independent folk practice, in stone, brick, clay and pottery.
The Mauryan setting
- •The Mauryas were the earliest empire builders and ruled over a vast geographical area.
- •A strong political base, a centralised administrative system and favourable economic and environmental conditions created surplus production. This led to urbanisation and paved the way for a renaissance in art and culture.
- •After an interregnum of more than a thousand years since the Indus Valley Civilisation-which had full command over stone cutting and sculpting-sculptural art revived in the Mauryan period, with a transition from wood to stone.
- •Mauryan art flourished mainly under royal patronage, while folk art also developed alongside. It is best studied in two parts: (1) court art and (2) folk art.
Court art: the palace
- •The 80-pillared hall discovered at Kumhrar (Patna) is believed to be the site of the Mauryan palace.
- •The city of Pataliputra had wooden fortifications.
- •In the words of Megasthenes: “The city formed a parallelogram, nine miles by one and a half miles, surrounded by a ditch 200 yards wide, and protected by a timber palisade with loopholes for the archers. The palisade was reinforced by 570 towers and had 64 gateways.”
Pillars: types and purpose
- •Mauryan pillars are of two types: those attached to a hall (e.g. the pillars of Kumhrar's 80-pillared hall), which have no capital; and Ashoka's independent, free-standing pillars.
- •Free-standing pillars are in turn of two kinds: one with animal capitals and the other without any capital.
- •Free-standing pillars were symbols of political power and authority, meant to spread Buddhist ideology and court orders across the Mauryan empire.

- •D.B. Spooner and Ananda K. Coomaraswamy held that Mauryan pillars were modelled on Achaemenian columns: such a stone tradition was absent in India before 300 BC, and Darius's conquest of north-western India created close cultural contact between Iran and India.
- •Some Ashokan pillars using the Kharoshthi script and the Aramaic language further strengthen this view.
Differences from Achaemenian pillars

Patna Kalam: common life, painted
A miniature tradition shaped by Mughal, Company and local influences, which made ordinary people and their work its subject.
The Patna School of Painting-also known as Patna Qalam, Patna Kalam or Company painting-is a style of Indian painting that existed in Bihar in the 18th and 19th centuries. It was the world's first independent school of painting to deal exclusively with commoners, and their lifestyle also helped the paintings gain popularity. Its principal centres were Patna, Danapur and Arrah.

Painters leave Delhi
Under Aurangzeb, artisans faced mass persecution and aversion towards art and painting. Painters left Delhi in search of shelter; one group moved east and settled in Murshidabad under the patronage of the Nawab of Bengal and other local aristocrats.

A distinctive synthesis /
Three influences, one local style
Patna Kalam took its basis from Mughal painting but developed its own approach and subject matter.
Mughal painting
- •Patna Kalam is an offshoot of Mughal painting and was built on its basic features, though its subject matter was quite different.
- •The colours and lining of the portraits clearly come from the Mughal style.
- •It lacks the splendour of the Mughal style and does not have the large paintings of kings and courts found predominantly in Mughal painting.
Company (British) style
- •Though an offshoot of Mughal painting, Patna Kalam carried the influence of European and local styles.
- •Shading was adopted from the British style.
- •For shading, unlike Delhi artists, the Patna painters used a slanting-dot system.
Local speciality
- •It reflects the influence of Mughal painting, the Company (British) style and local speciality-a synthesis of all three.
- •Diverging from the Mughal style of wide, exquisitely decorated borders, Patna Kalam focused primarily on the subject of the painting; its works are largely borderless.
In essence / सार
Mughal colour and line, British shading, and subjects drawn from local everyday life.
The painter's process /
Fine brushes, direct lines
The surface, the tools and the method of painting were all distinctive marks of this style.
Materials and tools
- •Patna Kalam belongs to the category of miniature painting, made mostly on paper, glass, mica and ivory sheets.
- •Indigenous style of colouring: brushes of one or two hairs were used for fine painting and fine lines.
- •Brush hair came from domestic animals such as the squirrel, goat, pig and buffalo.
- •Colours were extracted from indigenous plants, bark, flowers and metals.
- •The canvas, colours and brushes were prepared by the painters themselves.

Kajli Siyahi
Painters painted straight away with the brush, without first marking the contours of the picture in pencil. This technique is known as Kajli Siyahi.
Slanting-dot shading
Unlike the Delhi artists, Patna painters used a slanting-dot system for shading.
Sparse backgrounds
Backgrounds and landscapes were used sparingly to make paintings less expensive. When a background was used, it was mostly a door overlooking a river, a garden scene, a room partitioned by pillars and curtains, or ornamented draperies.
Daily life as subject /
People, occupations and birds
Themes came mostly from common daily life-Patna Kalam was the world's first independent school to do so.

Legacy /
The most important characteristic of Patna Kalam is its liveliness and its depiction of scenes of common life. Its miniature ivory paintings are considered better than Mughal painting in liveliness, precision, perfection and beauty. Hence the style is still relevant and is one of the most glorious legacies of Bihar.
